We operate from a fully air-conditioned, purpose-built facility in Mill Hill, London Borough of Barnet, with its own playground. Our classrooms are equipped with Montessori materials to create a rich learning environment.
A Montessori-prepared environment fosters independence, allowing children to learn through spontaneous activity. It serves as the “Third Teacher,” supporting practical, sensory, language, and mathematical development.
At our Montessori, we nurture the whole child, promoting active, joyful learning that builds a strong foundation for lifelong success.
Step By Step Montessori opened on 6/09/2004 with just five children. Under the leadership of Mrs. Khadijeh Nanji, a qualified Montessori teacher, it grew through word-of-mouth. Today, we are registered for 65 children (15 months to 5 years) and have expanded into a purpose-built facility in Mill Hill.
We provide a broad, balanced curriculum that nurtures emotional, intellectual, and social growth. As Montessori practitioners, we believe education and social development go hand in hand. We respect all cultural and religious backgrounds and strive to create a safe, inclusive environment where every child’s unique abilities are valued.
Step By Step Montessori aims to integrate Montessori principles into early childhood education, fostering a holistic learning environment that nurtures independence, creativity, and a love for lifelong learning. By implementing Montessori methods, we seek to provide children with a foundation for intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development, laying the groundwork for future success.
Curriculum Development: By implementing the characteristics of effective learning we design and implement a curriculum that is intertwined on Montessori & EYFS principles, emphasizing hands on learning, self-directed activities, and mixed-age classroom.
Teacher training: We provide comprehensive training for educators on the EYFS, Montessori philosophy, pedagogy, and classroom management techniques to ensure effective implementation.
Classroom Environment: We create a prepared environment that is conducive to exploration, discovery, and individualized learning experiences, with carefully selected materials and activities.
When we plan for learning staff consider children’s growing interests, their next steps in development and what learning they have observed. This ensures that our planning is based on children’s individual learning.
Our inclusive approach to scaffold children's learning entails creating an environment that embraces diversity and supports the individual needs of all learners.
Parental Involvement: We foster strong partnerships with parents through workshops, seminars, and regular communication to support continuity between home and our Montessori environment.
We Implement ongoing assessment methods that focus on the child’s progress and development, allowing for individualized instruction and adaptation of teaching strategies.
By implementing a comprehensive evaluation process that is rooted in inclusivity, collaboration, and continuous improvement, we ensure that our curriculum effectively meets the needs of all children, including those with SEND, and supports their holistic development and success.

Extremely high retention of staff. Most of our staff have been with us for more than 10 years, with some of the original founding team members still here who started in 2004. Many of our parents become involved in the community and participate.
We have friendly, experienced staff who hold the Montessori Diploma from the Association Montessori Internationale, as well as other relevant qualifications. All our staff have relevant safeguarding qualifications and first aid qualifications for children. The team are all dedicated and committed to the delivery of a first class Montessori and EYFS education. All teachers are actively encouraged to further their knowledge and understanding by attending staff training days. Staff/child ratios vary from 1:4 for two-year-olds up to 1:8 for older children.
We have been a teaching practice school for the Maria Montessori Institute since 2005.
Maria Montessori was born in Italy in 1870 and began her professional life as a doctor of medicine.
She then studied education, psychology and anthropology. Her unique approach to the teaching of children brought her world acclaim.
It is based on the notion that young children actively enjoy learning and that adults learn about children’s progress through observation.
Direct observation of the children in our Montessoris is the key to the teacher’s understanding of each child and enables their learning needs to be met individually.
A Montessori prepared environment allows children to act freely on their own initiative meeting their needs through individual spontaneous acts.
